South Australia pays some of the highest average locum rates for resident medical officers of any state in Australia. If you are looking for well-paid locum work in a state with manageable distances, a lower cost of living than Sydney or Melbourne, and genuine need across its regional hospitals, SA deserves a closer look.
SA Health delivers public hospital and community health services through 10 Local Health Networks (LHNs):
Central Adelaide LHN (Royal Adelaide Hospital, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital)
Northern Adelaide LHN (Lyell McEwin Hospital, Modbury Hospital)
Southern Adelaide LHN (Flinders Medical Centre, Noarlunga Hospital)
Women's and Children's Health Network (Women's and Children's Hospital)
Barossa Hills Fleurieu LHN
Eyre and Far North LHN
Flinders and Upper North LHN (Port Augusta, Whyalla)
Limestone Coast LHN (Mount Gambier)
Riverland Mallee Coorong LHN (Berri, Murray Bridge)
Yorke and Northern LHN
The metro LHNs (Central, Northern, Southern Adelaide) handle the bulk of acute presentations. The six regional LHNs cover country SA and are where most locum demand concentrates. Each LHN manages its own credentialing and workforce, so you will need to engage with the specific LHN where you want to work.
A new Rural General Practitioner Agreement (GPA) came into effect on 1 February 2024, negotiated between the Rural Support Service, AMA(SA), and RDASA. It sets the framework for how GPs contract with regional LHNs.
SA locum rates are consistently strong:
RMO/HMO locum average: $160 per hour (highest state average nationally). The range spans from $140 to $180 per hour depending on the facility and shift type.
Specialist locum rates: $2,000-$3,500+ per day depending on specialty and location.
GP VMO (rural): $1,800-$3,000+ per day. Aboriginal health service placements in remote SA can reach $2,000+ per day.
Permanent SA Health salary ranges for reference: Junior Medical Officers $81,814-$144,291; Senior Medical Officers $167,916-$248,077; Senior Consultants $227,591-$299,884, with total remuneration packages for senior consultants reaching $492,119-$641,452.
Rural placements typically include accommodation and travel. For remote Eyre and Far North placements, flights are standard.
SA's $160/hr RMO average significantly exceeds NSW ($140/hr) and WA ($120/hr). The cost of living in Adelaide is also materially lower than in Sydney or Melbourne, so your take-home goes further. Rent in Adelaide averages roughly 30-40 per cent less than Sydney for comparable properties.
This LHN covers the vast area west and north of Adelaide, including Ceduna, Port Lincoln, Coober Pedy, and the APY Lands. It is some of the most remote medicine in the state. Locum demand is constant, rates are at the top end, and you will see a broad case mix. Port Lincoln Hospital is the main facility on the Eyre Peninsula. Coober Pedy and the APY Lands involve Aboriginal health and genuine outback medicine.
Port Augusta and Whyalla anchor this region. Port Augusta Hospital is a key facility for the upper Spencer Gulf. The area serves mining communities, pastoral stations, and a significant Indigenous population. Emergency, general medicine, and GP locum shifts are regularly available.
Mount Gambier is the hub, serving the state's south-east. It is driveable from Adelaide (about 4.5 hours) or Melbourne (about 5 hours). The Mount Gambier and Districts Health Service runs a busy ED and surgical unit. This is a popular locum destination because it offers genuine rural medicine without extreme remoteness -- you still have access to cafes, a supermarket, and decent internet.
Berri, Renmark, and Murray Bridge form the Riverland corridor. Locum demand is moderate but steady. The area is 2-3 hours from Adelaide by road. Agriculture and ageing communities drive the health needs.
These LHNs cover peri-urban and regional areas closer to Adelaide -- the Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, and Mid North. Rates are slightly lower than the truly remote LHNs but the lifestyle trade-off is appealing.
Central, Northern, and Southern Adelaide LHNs offer the highest volume of shifts at lower rates. The Royal Adelaide Hospital, Lyell McEwin, Flinders Medical Centre, and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital are the major teaching hospitals. If you prefer consistent metro work without travel, Adelaide's hospitals have regular openings.
1. Current AHPRA registration -- unconditional and matching the role level.
2. ABN -- required for contractor-based work.
3. Medical indemnity insurance -- must cover locum work and any procedural scope.
4. National police check -- within the last two years.
5. SA Working with Children Check (DCSI screening) -- SA uses its own screening system, separate from other states.
6. LHN-specific credentialing -- each LHN manages its own process.
7. Complete vaccination records -- Hep B serology, MMR, varicella, dTpa, TB screening, COVID, influenza.
South Australia is investing in training. In 2026, 154 future GPs commenced training in the state -- a 35 per cent increase on 2025, with 74 training on a rural pathway (an 85 per cent increase). This is according to the RACGP, which called the uptake "a remarkable result."
But those trainees are years from independent practice. In the meantime, the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) has noted that SA has no up-to-date map of unmet health needs and service gaps, and health services are struggling to fill roles due to workforce shortages.
Locums remain a critical part of SA's health delivery -- and that will not change quickly.
Adelaide is small enough that you can live centrally and commute to any metro hospital in 30 minutes. For rural SA, distances are real but manageable compared to WA or QLD. Port Augusta is 3 hours north, Mount Gambier 4.5 hours south-east, and Port Lincoln is a short flight.
SA has a mild climate compared to the tropical north. Summers are hot and dry (40+ in Adelaide, hotter outback), but you avoid the cyclones and humidity of northern Australia.
